Accept Bitcoin (BTC) payments

Bitcoin is the oldest and best-known cryptocurrency, and many customers already hold some. Payments settle on the Bitcoin network, which adds a new block about every ten minutes.

The Bitcoin network

Customers pay BTC on Bitcoin. Crypto Merchant counts a payment once the network has confirmed it the number of times below.

Waits are typical times from the network's block interval, not guarantees. Full list: coins and networks.

How accepting BTC works

  1. 1

Create an invoice or share your checkout

Price it in your own currency. Send the customer to your checkout page, share a payment link, or create the invoice with the API.

  2. 2

    The customer picks BTC

The invoice shows the exact BTC amount at a locked rate and a deposit address used for this invoice only, with a QR code.

  3. 3

    Crypto Merchant watches the network

Once the payment has enough confirmations, the invoice is marked paid and your webhook, if you use one, is called.

  4. 4

Your balance grows, and you pay out when you like

Payments collect in your business's pool wallet. Pay out any time with no minimum.

What it costs

  • 1% per paid invoice. Expired or cancelled invoices cost nothing.
  • Free setup. Going live takes a one-time $25 payment, credited in full to your gas balance.
  • No sweep fee. Moving payments into your pool costs only the network fee.
  • Payouts any time, with no minimum. Swaps into a holding coin include a service margin in the rate.

Why businesses accept BTC

  • Reach customers who already hold BTC and prefer to spend it.
  • No card chargebacks: confirmed crypto payments can't be reversed by the payer.
  • Prefer stable value? Have your BTC swapped into a stablecoin automatically. See stablecoin payments.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a BTC payment take to confirm?
Crypto Merchant waits for 2 confirmations on Bitcoin, which usually takes about 20 minutes. The invoice page updates on its own when the payment is confirmed.
What does it cost to accept BTC?
1% per paid invoice. Setup is free and unpaid or expired invoices cost nothing. Moving coins on a blockchain also costs a small network fee, paid from your gas balance.
Can I get paid out in a different coin than BTC?
Yes. You can pay out each coin to its own wallet, or have your balance swapped into one holding coin, such as USDT, before it is paid out. Swap rates include a service margin.
What happens if a customer sends BTC on the wrong network?
Customers must send the coin shown on the invoice, on the network shown. The same coin on two networks is not interchangeable, and coins sent on another network may be lost for good.
Do I need ID to start accepting BTC?
No. Anyone, in any country, can sign up without ID documents. You still have to follow the law where you do business and the Crypto Merchant Terms of Service.
